Available spots
Service Description
Students will work in the beautifully equipped papermaking studio of author and professional hand papermaker, Kelsey Pike. We'll use a hollander beater to create pulps, and experiment with papers made from recycled papers, plant fibers and fabrics. We'll push the boundaries further by adding color and using paper to create works of flat and sculptural art. We'll experiment with adding other art media to papermaking techniques to create new possibilities for your practice. This course will also include an overview of the history and science of papermaking, and well as the history and contemporary practice if its use as an art medium. Students will start with the basics of western sheet formation, using both dipping and pouring methods. We'll move on to creating colored pulps using aqueous dispersed pigments, then use them to create works of art in paper - know as pulp paintings using various techniques and collage materials. Later, we will learn and explore sculptural techniques - including laminate casting, pulp casting, draping and others. We'll finish the experience by pouring a giant 3x5 foot pulp painting together. Saturday, August 23 - noon-5pm Sunday, August 24 - noon-5pm 1 hour snack and coffee break included in each day This wet and messy class is hands-on! Please wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and are non-slip. You may also want to bring an apron or change of clothes. This studio is up a single flight of stairs, and will involve hours of standing and some heavy lifting. The paper will be dry and ready for pickup the following week. Taught by Kelsey Pike. The class maximum is 4 students.
